I have to draw a profile with a resolution of about 1 cm. SedLog is not very practical at this scale as 1 cm beds disappear when selecting the 1:10 scale. Do I really have to do it with a drawing program like Illustrator or AutoCad? How do YOU do it?
Please help!
Thank you!

Hi, Johannes--
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I can offer any useful advice on what software to use for your purpose, but if it was me, I'd go with the Illustrator option. (I've never tried AutoCAD). Don't spend a lot of money on task-specific software for lith-logging, unless a customer demands it.
I have 27 years of geology experience producing lithology logs of wells and cores for the oil & gas industry. I've used numerous industry-specific lith-logging software packages that have licence fees costing thousands of dollars, and I can honestly say that you DON'T get what you pay for. For the money, you get software that's easy to use and produces a very consistent "look", but the downside is that you get very inflexible software that won't do what you want it to, uses crummy raster graphics (no PostScript), has a terrible user interface (no Undo; no keyboard shortcuts; no standard vector objects like rectangles, circles, arrows; no ability to use normal fonts or text styling, etc.; no custom scaling; minimal or no layering; etc. etc. etc.)
Illustrator (and similar "general purpose" drawing applications--I used to like FreeHand, but it's no longer supported by Adobe) may seem expensive, and have a steep learning curve, but they really are a bargain if you want to produce good-looking, infinitely-scalable output exactly the way you want it.
I haven't used any freeware or open-source products, so I can't suggest any, sorry.
Good luck!
