Thin Sections from Top Bellerophon

Sorry for the hiatus,

but here are the good news:

I have thin sections from some very interesting beds from the top Bellerophon Fmt. directly below the contact with the Werfen Fmt. (That would be directly at the P/T boundary). There are some very interesting sedimentary features where it is currently not clear if they are roots or bioturbation by some sorts of animals. I will prepare pretty pictures (as far as carbonates can be pretty). There are also some very small fragments of fossils: one gastropod and small shell fragments (Any hints for papers for gastropod identification in the Bellerophon Fmt. most welcome. No, it is not Bellerophonella).

I have found a new home for ProfileLogger: profilelogger.berlios.de. Not much to see, yet, but if anyone is interested in screen shots (or even contributing code, documentation, fossil patterns, lithology patterns, translations, etc.) - go have a look or drop me an email.

Just a short notice:

I am cancelling my sourceforge.net account because of the ridiculous restrictions applied to software exports by US laws. I am based in Italy and have to obey local laws and I feel that software I write should be freely available to anybode.

But I see no reason, why I should be prohibited from linking against cryptographic libraries (as, for example, in many database client libraries) so that everyone can use software I write. Especially because I see no connection between a software to log and draw the content of a lithological column and war. It. Just. Does. Not. Apply.

ProfileLogger will find a new home.

Drawing Profiles reloaded - software in the making!

Since I could not find anything suitable for free to draw geological columns I did what every hacker [tm] does: I scratched my itch and hacked together a software in C++ with Qt as the GUI toolkit. A first prototype is up and running, I am currently entering data from the field documentation. The software draws a geological column containing:

Height

Bed number

Grain sizes (carbonate and clastic)

Lithology

Color

Bedding type

Sediment structures

Fossil symbols

Custom symbols

boundary types

Notes in plain text.

All but grain sizes is fully customizeable. I am having some trouble in exporting to SVG, PDF or a bitmap format, though - but this will be solved soon.

If this sounds interesting to anybody I could provide binary builds vor Mac OS X. Builds for Microsoft Windows and of course Linux should be also feasable. If this sounds interesting to you just drop me a mail at johannes.lochmann@gmail.com

I have to draw a profile with a resolution of about 1 cm. SedLog is not very practical at this scale as 1 cm beds disappear when selecting the 1:10 scale. Do I really have to do it with a drawing program like Illustrator or AutoCad? How do YOU do it?

Rockfall with two victims in Spain

A Rockfall on a beach in Spain killed two women. According to the sources the rock failure was about 40-50 m high above a beach. The event occured in dry conditions. The beach was closed when the rocks came down.

Hmm... Veggie Lasagne!

As you might have noticed I really like to eat delicious stuff - and I am trying hard to cook real tasty food for me and my better half. Today she longed for veggie lasagne:

Here is how to prepare it:

Slice zucchini and egg fruit, grill in a grill pan (without oil, obviously).

Prepare bechamel (A little butter, flour, salt, pepper, milk, nutmeg).

Prepare tomato sauce (a little onion (or, yet better, spring onion), olive oil, garlic, tomato, salt, a pinch of sugar).

From stratigraphically older to younger: tomato sauce, pasta sheet, grilled veggetables, bechamel, tomato sauce - repeat at your taste. Finish with tomato sauce. Add a little Mozzarella, a little olive oil.

Bake at about 180 °C for 20-30 minutes (Mozzarella should get a golden color, no darker!)

Let sit and cool for some minutes.

Debunking Christianity has a link to a story I can barely believe. Not because again someone is under the impression to have found some evidence for biblical stories, no, it's because, well, it's embarassing. First I did not know (and did not even want to know) that there is a publication called Biblical Archaeology Review. The proposed cover for their next issue supposedly will call a geological feature "Lot's Wife". Ugh. Doh. I don't know what to say. The Stupid. It Burns.

A New meme is out in the wild: Fully Equipped Geology Student by Geotripper, The Lost Geologist fully equipped for fieldwork. My contribution is intended to be a semi-serious mix :)

Hair: Nah, the little that is still left is usually cut quite short. Usually under a hat of some sort when out in the mountains.
Sunburned Peeling Nose: Nope, never. I'm quite picky when it comes to sun protection.
Beard: Usually cleanly shaved. Usually.
T-shirt and Logo: Usually neutral. When out in the field I usually wear shirts - they dry much faster.
Belt and Buckle: Leather Belt, carries rock hammer and brunton.
Pockets: cell phone and car keys. So if I happen to loose my backpack I am not completely lost.
Rock Hammer: on my belt. For opening beer bootles and collecting samples, having a closer look - a rock hammer has many uses. But sometimes you have to drag around heavier hammers for metamorphic rocks... ugh.
Legs: muskular? well, sort of. Tanned? Seldom.
Brunton: of course.
Eyes: Behind sunglasses.
Photo Gear: Currently a Nikon D90 with 18-105. Nature is beautiful!
GPS Reciever: Handy. But map reading (or guessing - some maps are so... open to interpretation) is still essential.
Shoes: Sturdy ones. With good soles. Essiantial.
Various Other Stuff: knife, sample bags, chisel, fieldbook, maps, something to eat and drink, some toilet paper.

Dreaded Winter is Back Again...

... Darn. I had thought the winter was over. Yesterday I drove the Arlberg col (47° 8'10.51"N, 10°11'28.59"E) and finished in the middle of a snow storm - visibility was down to 1-3 meters in particularily windy parts. Not very nice when you are tired. Down in the valley the snow changed to rain, so all went finally well.

Fluvioglacial Sediments from Baumkirchen, Austria

As I was sifting through some older pictures I wanted to tag appropriately I found some shots of fluvioglacial sediments from Baumkirchen, Austria (47°18'23.22"N, 11°34'8.87"E).

Those are fluvioglacial Sediments deposited while the last glaciers retreaded from the Inn valley. The look a bit like warves but there are certain doupts if the material change observered really is directly linked to yearly cycles. Apparently there have been found some twiggs that have been C-14-ed, but I was unable to found any publications. Also I have heared that there has been found a fossilized pike, but no publications whatsoever...

The material was used to produce bricks until some time which has lead to some great outcrops. When I was there in 2007 they where filling everything up with demolition waste, though, so that this outcrop may be lost.

It was pitch dark - but not at 30 seconds at a camera speed of ISO 200. I especially like the converging lines of the roofs and the colors in the sky completely invisble to the naked eye.

Plant Fossils from the Brennermesozoikum

Today I am going to post some Fossils from the Brennermesozoikum on the Brenner Pass between Austria and Italy in the middle of the Alps. At this particular point where I found this samples the lithology consists of terrigene schistous anthracit-mica sediments perhaps originating from some intracontinental swampy area.

Plant fossils are not very common at this site, but are occasionally found in the waste disposal sites of some (rather fruitless) attempts to mine for anthrazit in the last century.

This Photo shows a Lepidodendron twig. As far as I can tell this is the first one found on this site:

Can You Identify This Rocks

I found this a little south of Napoli in Southern Italy on the W-coast. How would you name this? Could it be an intraclast breccia?

This was found nearby - it seems to consist mostly of reworked clasts of the above rocks. Could this be real breccia made of reworked intraclast breccia and sand?

Pleasant surprises while mapping

When I was mapping in the Martell Valley (46°33'7.09"N, 10°45'8.77"E) last summer, I met a small herd of Haflinger Horses. They are a typical horse race for the Alps and were originally used as workhorse for carrying loads, pulling trunks out of the woods and generally working the land.

Poacher Spit: A Truely Wounderful Dish

This is a truely delicious dish my mother-in-law prepared for us the last time we visited her. It's clean, simple though very tasty and aromatic.

Here is how to prepare it (from inner to outer layer):

Cut some scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris) twigs. Other aromatic woods will work, too - try common juniper (Juniperus communis), for example! Leave bark and needles on it. They will season your dish.

Get some tasty meat. Pork, beef, game - whatever is handy, it will work as long as you don't overcook the meat.

Season the meat at your taste: salt, pepper, mayby some garlic, juniper, rosemary, thyme, oregano - don't use too many different tastes. Salt, pepper, garlic and rosemary are almost always a winner combo.

Wrap the seasoned meat around your stick.

Get some thinly sliced Speck. Now, this could be tricky at your place. But italian prosciutto, bacon, or similar products should work, too. Fix everything with some toothpicks

Put everything in the oven for about 18 minutes at 180 degree Celsius.

Remove toothpicks, serve and enjoy! Oh, eating this dish is a bit messy, but the perfume will fill your whole house!

Funka Fireworks

Where I am currently living there is a tradition called funka. This was done right yesterday. The local firefighters and other organizations build a tower out of four upright standing trunks and fill the void inbetween with firewood, junk paper and other burnable stuff I could not identify. On the top of this sort of tower is the funka, a sort of doll filled with fireworks. The below photo shows such a tower being built.

When it is really pitch dark this construction is set on fire and burns like a giant torch and sparks fly all around ("Funken" is the german word for "spark", by the way, and "funka" is the local dialect word for "Funken" but also the verb for "throwing out sparks"). Sorry, no photo from this part, I missed it, was in the kitchen cooking sardines, a in my opinion widely undervalued fish - filet it, dust lightly with flour, a hot pan, olive oil, a pinch of salt and some drops of fresh lemon juice... A dish to die for!

After some time the wooden construction begins to crush down and fall apart shooting sparks all over the sky. Again, sorry, no pictures... The sardines, you know... You have to set priorities...

Then, when you think all is over a firework goes of. I was caught completely on surprise because I have been told previously that only the funka on top of the construction is supposed to explode and had no time to setup the tripod. Most of the shots where garbage at a hand held shutter speed between one and four seconds - but here are some I think are worthwile showing - enjoy!
